In Spain, like in other countries, Christmas is a time for family reunion, party and celebration but also a time for rest and reflection. In this post we are going to tell you some of the main customs and traditions of Christmas in Spain so that if you have decided to spend Christmas in our country, you make the most of this time.

Las principales tradiciones navideñas/ The main Christmas traditions.

La decoración y tradiciones de Navidad en España/ The decoration and Christmas traditions in Spain.

In November, sometimes even earlier, begins the so-called Christmas campaign by which malls, shop windows and city streets are decorated with Christmas lights and ornaments. Also, as in other European countries, we enjoy the traditional Christmas Markets.

The Christmas decorations at homes have two characteristics elements: the typical Christmas tree and the Nativity scene, a representation of Jesus Christ`s birth made of figures.

During Christmas, bars and restaurants become a meeting point for friends and co-workers gather to celebrate the traditional Christmas dinners or lunches. It is also traditional that each employee receives a "Christmas’ basket" full of typical Christmas products.

In many villages in Spain there is still a custom among children which consists of going from house to house singing villancicos (typical Christmas songs) and in return they receive presents, candy or sweets. For this tasks they use typical Christmas instruments: panderetas and zambombas.

In Spain we celebrate Christmas Eve having a special dinner with our family. While the menu varies from family to family and also depending on the area of Spain we are, one thing is always true: it is certainly a very hearty dinner, where there are many starters, a main course, desserts and finally, a variety of typical Christmas sweets such as turrón and marzipan. As for the starters, prawns and shrimp are always present. The main course is usually some meat, like lamb or suckling pig.

The following day we celebrate the Christmas Day meal, an event as familiar and abundant in food as the previous day. Although in Spain traditionally we give presents to each other on January 6 (Three Wise Men), it is getting increasingly common that many families give presents this day, following the Anglo-Saxon tradition of Santa Claus.

La Nochevieja y el Año Nuevo/ New Year’s Eve and New Year Day.

Although in many countries Christmas ends on December 25, in Spain it still continues until January 6, the day we celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men.

On the last night of the year, most Spaniards again have dinner with his family, then we head out to celebrate. It is also tradition among those seeking something different plans to rent a house to spend this day with our family or friends, or to travel to another city to welcome the new year. The oddest thing about this day is the tradition of dismissing the year by eating 12 grapes to the rhythm of the bells that mark the clock from Puerta del Sol in Madrid. With each grape we make a wish. It is a curious ritual performed to enter the new year with luck. Finally, we toast with champagne and congratulate the new year to our family and friends.

January 1st is a national holiday in Spain. Everything is closed as most people are sleeping after the New Year’s Eve celebration and is also traditional to have lunch with the family on this day.

El Día de Reyes/ The Three Wise Men.

--
Finally, Christmas ends on January 6, with the Three Wise Men arrival. This day is mainly dedicated to the little ones, as this is the day they receive their Christmas presents.

The previous day, on the eve of the Three Wise Men arrival to every house in Spain to leave their presents to the children, Three Kings’ parades are held in every Spanish city, in which the Kings parade through the streets so that children can greet them and give them their Christmas letter.

--
The next day the children wake up excited to know what presents the Three Wise Men have brought them. This day is typical eating Roscón de Reyes, a cake that contains surprises inside: If you get the figure of the king you will be crowned, but if you get the bean you’ll have to pay for the cake next year.
